Improving health equity through research.

Why

With our research we want to ensure that the right people have the right tools at the right time to improve health and achieve equity in health for all.

What

We employ rigorous scientific methodology to develop, evaluate, and scale digital solutions and innovative strategies, improving last mile healthcare delivery and health financing. We strive to contribute to more equitable access to quality care, particularly in underserved communities.

Focus Areas

Who we are

The Global Digital Last Mile Health Research Lab is based at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin’s Center for Global Health (CCGH) and Heidelberg University’s Heidelberg Institute for Global Health (HIGH). Our transdisciplinary research group integrates expertise in technology, epidemiology, social sciences, clinical medicine, and public health towards developing and assessing solutions for complex health challenges. Our team comprises members from diverse sectors, including academia, civil society, and the private sector.

Approach

Why Global Digital Health and Last Mile Health?

Digital technologies offer unique opportunities to overcome barriers to health service access and delivery, improve the quality of care, and promote financial inclusion. Our focus on the “last mile“ – the final leg of delivering health services – ensures that our work addresses the needs of the most remote and underserved communities. Our work stands at the intersection of global and public health, implementation research, digital technology, and innovation. We employ rigorous scientific methods to effectively develop, evaluate, and scale succesful digital innovations.

Our Methodology

EXPERIMENTAL

QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL

Mixed Methods

We employ quantitative and qualitative research techniques, conducting formative, design, implementation, and proof of concept studies, prototype and field-testing as well as large scale randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental research. In our research we assess the value and cost-effectiveness of digital interventions in resource-poor communities to inform practical policy decisions. We focus on solutions based on human- and equity-centered design with a system-based approach.

Evidence building and advocacy

Advocacy

Integration

Dissemination

Our dedication goes beyond pure research. We aim to establish a solid evidence base to advocate for the integration of digital and innovative solutions into public health practice. Through context-adapted research practices, cross-sectoral collaborations, and responsible dissemination of results, we aim to promote the effectiveness of interventions and advocate for their adoption at local, national, and international levels.
